Georgia Cop Killed Near Emory, Leaves Behind Pregnant Wife and 3 Kids

Officer Killed During Shooting Near CDC Headquarters in Atlanta

A dedicated DeKalb County police officer was fatally shot during a shooting incident involving a gunman who opened fire from a building opposite the CDC headquarters. The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, was known for his strong community service and was survived by a pregnant wife and three children.

The incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. when the suspect stormed into a CVS on the Emory University campus in Atlanta, shooting at nearby CDC buildings. The fallen officer was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries, surrounded by family members.

Interim Police Chief Greg Padrick expressed deep sadness over the loss, emphasizing the officer responded bravely to the emergency and gave his life in the line of duty. Community leaders highlighted his commitment to service and dedication to the safety of others.

DeKalb County officials announced that there were no other civilian injuries, and authorities confirmed the shooter was also killed—either by police gunfire or self-inflicted wounds. Police are currently uncertain about whether the shooter’s fatal injuries were intentional.

Investigations suggest the gunman targeted the CDC after reportedly becoming ill with a condition he blamed on a COVID-19 vaccine, based on family interviews with police. During the attack, the suspect fired numerous rounds at law enforcement and the CDC building, which also contains a daycare with 92 children, all of whom are safe.

Local authorities reassured the public that the threat had ended and the scene was secure. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens assured parents that the children at the daycare remained unharmed and promised efforts to reunite families quickly. A police cruiser hit by about a dozen gunshots was also visible at the scene.

The CDC campus was placed on lockdown following the incident, as investigators continued to piece together the events that led to the tragic shooting.
