President Trump Approves Military Action Against Latin American Drug Cartels
In a significant escalation, the President has secretly authorized the military to use force against certain Latin American drug cartels designated as foreign terrorist organizations. This decision marks the most aggressive move to date against gangs involved in trafficking deadly drugs such as fentanyl across the US-Mexico border, activities previously handled mainly by law enforcement agencies.
The new directive allows US forces to engage these cartels both on land and at sea. A White House source indicated that efforts are aimed at dismantling and destroying operations like Venezuela’s Cartel de Los Soles, with a goal to completely eradicate them from the Western Hemisphere. The State Department’s list of designated terrorist organizations involved in drug trafficking includes Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, Cartel de Los Soles, and the MS-13 gang from El Salvador.
This hardline stance is part of a broader campaign, which has seen the administration increase tariffs on Canada and Mexico over their handling of drugs and human smuggling, as well as stepping up immigration enforcement on gang-related migrants.
Measures also include a $50 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, accused of violating US drug laws. The administration’s anti-cartel efforts involve coordination among multiple departments, including Defense, Justice, Homeland Security, and Intelligence agencies.
White House officials emphasize that protecting the homeland remains the top priority, with the recent actions being part of a strategic effort to combat drug trafficking and gang violence at its source.
