NYPD Arrests Shoplifter on Coney Island, While Quality-of-Life Officers Overlook Encampment

Newly deployed NYPD officers on routine patrol responded swiftly Thursday by apprehending a shoplifter along Coney Island’s boardwalk. Meanwhile, a specialized “quality-of-life” team ignored a homeless encampment nearby, despite previous commitments to address such issues.

The officers from the 60th Precinct happened to be passing by the Brooklyn Beach Shop when store security detained a suspect for shoplifting. The shop’s owner, Maya Miller, explained she called 911, but due to delays, she flagged down the officers directly.

Conversely, the five-member quality-of-life squad, part of the department’s initiative to reduce frequent complaints, only issued a warning to a dog owner and escorted a scooter rider off the premises. Despite being informed about an encampment in a nearby gazebo, officers chose to walk past without taking action, even though officials had promised to tackle such nuisances.

Residents expressed frustration with the persistent presence of homeless individuals on the beachfront. Noely Quinones, a local, remarked, “They crash here early in the morning. I hope the enforcement teams do something about it.”

Joe and Diane Tragona, residents of Bath Beach, shared that the encampment remains a longstanding issue and expressed hope for increased intervention. The new police unit, comprising 16 officers in the 60th Precinct, was created to address nuisances like drug activity, illegal vending, and trash destruction, as part of a citywide rollout planned for the summer.

The encampment remained after the squad concluded their patrol. The department’s Chief William Glenn highlighted that the unit has responded to nearly 10,000 quality-of-life complaints and aims to expand citywide shortly. The effort seeks to improve daily life for New Yorkers by addressing common urban issues, including homelessness and disorderly conduct.
