Son Heung-min: Why I stayed at Tottenham Before Choosing LAFC

Son Heung-min Transfers to LAFC in Emotional Farewell to Tottenham

Son Heung-min has officially joined LAFC after ending his decade-long stint at Tottenham Hotspur. The move, valued at over £20 million—the club’s record MLS fee—marks a new chapter for the South Korean star, who initially hesitated about relocating to the United States.

At his unveiling in Los Angeles, Son revealed he was persuaded to make the switch after a compelling conversation with LAFC’s general manager, John Thorrington. “It was not my first choice, but John changed my mind,” he admitted. During his first visit, he was seen supporting LAFC in their victory over Tigres and even broke into tears upon announcing his departure from Tottenham.

Reflecting on his time at Spurs, Son expressed deep gratitude, recalling how the club welcomed him despite language barriers and cultural differences. “When I arrived in 2015, I didn’t speak English or know London, but I was embraced with open arms,” he said. “Now, after 10 years, North London is in my heart forever.”

Son, who scored 173 goals for Tottenham and became a club legend, explained that he left in search of a new challenge, feeling “very empty” after his emotional farewell match in Seoul. Despite his age, he remains confident in his physicality and skill, promising to bring exciting performances to his new team.

“I’m here to win and to perform,” he added. “I’ll show you exciting football and aim for success.”

In a heartfelt farewell message to Tottenham supporters, Son wrote, “This has been my home for the past decade. I am proud of everything we’ve achieved together.” He also shared that he had formed lifelong friendships, served as a captain, and even became a godfather within the club.

Son will reunite with former teammate Hugo Lloris at LAFC, who topped the Western Conference last season but fell short in the playoffs. Son expressed pride in his journey and is eager to contribute to his new club’s success.
