Rachel Maddow: Why We Shouldn’t Cave to Trump’s Bogus Lawsuits

Rachel Maddow Wins Defamation Case Against Devin Nunes

In 2021, former Congressman Devin Nunes filed a defamation lawsuit against MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow after she discussed his involvement in the Russia scandal on her show. Unlike many media outlets that tend to settle or dismiss such cases, Maddow and NBC/Universal opted to fight the lawsuit in court.

The legal battle concluded with a favorable ruling for Maddow and NBC. A judge dismissed Nunes’ claims, citing a lack of evidence that Maddow was aware of the alleged false information. The court found no proof that Maddow had a “high degree of awareness of probable falsity” or that her reporting was influenced by any political bias that reckless disregard for the truth.

The ruling was detailed in a 24-page decision, which highlighted that Nunes failed to substantiate his allegations. Both Nunes’ lawyers and representatives of Trump Media did not respond immediately to queries about the outcome.

This case underscores an important principle in journalism: when faced with baseless defamation claims, reputable media outlets should stand their ground. Maddow and NBC’s decision to contest the lawsuit aligns with traditional journalistic practices of defending freedom of the press against unfounded legal challenges.
