Newcastle Eye Bold Move for Aston Villa Captain John McGinn Amid Transfer Rumors
Newcastle Targets Aston Villa Captain John McGinn Amid Midfield Reinforcement Plans
Newcastle United is contemplating a bid for Aston Villa’s captain, John McGinn, as part of their efforts to strengthen the midfield ahead of the new season.
Manager Eddie Howe is seeking to increase his midfield options to six players following the recent sale of Sean Longstaff to Leeds United for £12 million. Currently, Howe’s squad boasts only four available midfielders, with Joe Willock injured for four to six weeks due to a foot injury sustained during a friendly match in Singapore.
McGinn, 30, has become a prime target for Newcastle, who value his dependability and leadership qualities—especially pertinent given the club’s challenging summer transfer period. Although Newcastle has yet to make an official move, McGinn remains high on their list as they focus on acquiring a replacement for striker Alexander Isak, who has been sidelined after being excluded from training.

The Scotland international may be available this transfer window, with Aston Villa reportedly rejecting interest from Everton. Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, reportedly prefers to keep McGinn, though the club also faces the challenge of needing to sell players. After seven years at Villa, McGinn might be open to a new challenge, especially with Newcastle offering Champions League football.
Other midfield options considered by Newcastle include Jacob Ramsey and Jack Rudoni. The current midfield roster features Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, and Lewis Miley, though Tonali was managing a minor knee issue recently.
