Trump Administration Seeks to Cancel Solar For All Program and Reclaim Funds

The Solar For All initiative was part of President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, aiming to distribute $7 billion in grants to assist low- and middle-income homeowners in installing solar panels. The program’s goal was to reduce energy costs and promote clean energy investments.

However, the Trump administration announced on Tuesday that it was unlawfully canceling this federally approved program and attempting to retrieve the funds allocated for helping underserved Americans. This move has sparked strong criticism from supporters of renewable energy development.

Senator Bernie Sanders, the author of the Solar For All legislation, criticized Trump’s actions, stating:

“I introduced the Solar for All program to drastically cut electric bills for working families by up to 80%, putting money back into the pockets of ordinary Americans rather than fossil fuel billionaires. Now, Donald Trump wants to unlawfully terminate this program to protect the profits of his fossil fuel industry friends. This is outrageous.”

He emphasized that the program would create lower utility bills, thousands of sustainable jobs, and help combat climate change. Sanders condemned Trump’s efforts to dismantle the initiative, especially amid rising energy costs and environmental crises. He vowed to fight to preserve this vital program.

Critics point out that Trump’s energy policies are heavily influenced by fossil fuel industry money. Since launching his 2024 campaign, fossil fuel companies have invested millions into his super PAC. During his presidency, Trump obstructed renewable energy efforts and promoted fossil fuels, further delaying the transition to cleaner energy sources.

While presidents lack the authority to cancel programs unilaterally, court rulings have repeatedly struck down Trump’s attempts to do so. His current actions appear designed to make utility bills more expensive for consumers to benefit wealthy donors tied to the oil and gas sector.
