Sharon Stone Reveals Public Fight with Michael Douglas

Conflict Between Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas Before ‘Basic Instinct’

There was notable tension between Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas prior to their on-screen collaboration in 1992’s “Basic Instinct,” according to Stone.

In a recent interview, she recounted an intense public confrontation at Cannes, where Douglas allegedly screamed at her after a heated exchange. Stone explained that their disagreement started when she defended a friend against Douglas’s negative comments, which visibly upset him.

She shared, “He responded harshly, questioning what I knew about certain family relationships,” and recounted how she challenged him directly, suggesting they step outside to discuss privately. Despite the initial friction, their encounter was described as ending on friendly terms — though it left an impression.

Stone noted that although Douglas seemed to dislike her during casting, she didn’t view this as a disadvantage. She felt her resilience in the face of his outburst actually worked to her advantage when filming the provocative movie.

“I was unfazed by his yelling,” she said. “That aspect of his temper suited the character, and I didn’t care.” Over time, their relationship reportedly evolved into a strong friendship, with Stone expressing admiration for Douglas’s talents and personality.

Stone claimed Douglas was “triggered” after she defended a close friend he spoke about negatively. Despite the rocky start, they later became great friends.

However, Douglas’s representatives stated he doesn’t remember meeting Stone before her audition, suggesting their paths crossed primarily during promotional activities for the film. Still, Stone maintained that their professional and personal dynamic grew positively, culminating in mutual respect.

Interestingly, Stone previously revealed she was paid significantly less than Douglas for the film and faced disrespect from crew members, which she described as a challenging experience but ultimately empowering.
