Derek Dooley Enters Georgia Senate Race Against Ossoff

Derek Dooley Enters Georgia Senate Race

A Republican with strong ties to Georgia’s football scene is vying once again for a U.S. Senate seat representing the state. Derek Dooley, son of legendary Bulldogs coach Vince Dooley, announced his candidacy as part of a competitive GOP primary aiming to challenge incumbent Democrat Senator Jon Ossoff.

Positioning himself as a political outsider, Dooley pledged to prioritize Georgia’s interests and criticized Ossoff for being more focused on self-preservation than representing Georgia values. “Leadership matters. The state lacks a voice that truly reflects Georgia because Ossoff is more concerned with his political future, opposing initiatives from the Trump era,” said Dooley, who is also an attorney.

He highlighted the importance of hard work and perseverance, inspired by American spirit, aiming to bring that ethos to all Georgians and Americans alike. Dooley has the backing of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a family friend who passed on running himself.

Dooley’s coaching career includes tenure at Louisiana Tech and the University of Tennessee, but he struggled to secure winning seasons. His most recent role was as a senior offensive analyst at Alabama in 2023. He also has ties to New York, having served as a senior offensive assistant and tight ends coach for the Giants in 2020 and 2021.

Dooley faces competitors such as Reps. Mike Collins, Buddy Carter, and horse trainer Reagan Box. With Republicans needing to defend 22 out of 35 Senate seats in the 2026 cycle, this race is seen as a critical opportunity for GOP gains, especially considering the seat held by Ossoff, which is considered a top pickup target for Republicans.
