Recent public voter records reveal that Sydney Sweeney has been registered as a Republican in Monroe County, Florida, since June 2024. Her political affiliation emerged shortly after she featured in a controversial American Eagle jeans campaign, which garnered significant social media backlash for alleged promotion of “Nazi propaganda.”
In the campaign, Sweeney, 27, appears in videos and photos emphasizing her jeans. One ad shows her crossing out the word “genes” to replace it with “jeans,” while another features her lying down and zipping up her jeans, discussing how traits like hair and eye color are inherited from parents. The actress, known for her role in “Euphoria,” concluded her video by stating, “My jeans are blue,” highlighting her blue eyes.
Many TikTok users and critics accused the ads of conveying racist and eugenicist connotations, with some describing the inclusive campaign as a “racialized dog whistle.” Several commentators linked the language to pseudoscientific notions historically used to endorse racial hierarchies. Despite the controversy, American Eagle responded by stating, “Great jeans look good on everyone,” emphasizing that the campaign was solely about the jeans and individual stories.
Following the backlash, including mockery by celebrities such as Doja Cat and Lizzo, American Eagle defended its marketing, asserting that “great jeans look good on everyone” and that it celebrates diverse styles and confidence in how people wear their jeans.
Sweeney has previously faced criticism for her political stance. In 2022, she was scrutinized after her family held a birthday celebration for her mother, featuring attendees wearing MAGA caps and “Blue Lives Matter” shirts—an event she later described as an innocent, humorous gathering that was “turned into an absurd political statement” due to misinterpretation.
