Young Baseball Star Wins State Little League Home Run Derby

Jeremy Katz, a 12-year-old from Kings Park, made waves after clinching the home run derby at the New York State Little League Championship on Staten Island, proudly earning the title for his team from St. James-Smithtown.

Reflecting on his performance, Klein said, “In the first round, I hit two out of five pitches. I felt confident and relaxed.” He continued, “In the second round, I was feeling great and managed to hit five home runs—the best I’ve ever done.” Katz, a pitcher and first baseman batting an impressive .870 this season, prepared for the contest by studying MLB’s top hitters during a rain delay, especially focusing on Cal Raleigh’s technique of driving his back knee into the ground.

Beyond his batting prowess, Katz also showcased his skills on the mound, feeling confident during his pitch and receiving strong defensive support from his teammates. The team remains spirited, engaging in playful tag games during their hotel stay, focused on their upcoming challenge.

Their next obstacle is the state final against Staten Island’s South Shore, following a 2-0 victory over White Plains. Notably, the team had allowed just a single run throughout the tournament, underscoring their strong defense.
