Legendary golfer gives surprising guidance as Charlie Woods progresses in golf

Charlie Woods during a tournament

Charlie Woods, aspiring golfer and son of Tiger Woods, is being encouraged to emulate Rory McIlroy’s swing rather than his father’s. Tiger Woods, considered one of the greatest golfers of all time with 15 major championships, has openly expressed his preference for Charlie to model his technique after McIlroy’s, whom he admires and respects.

Woods commented, “I told Charlie, don’t copy my swing. Copy Rory’s.” Having observed McIlroy’s career development extensively, Woods believes McIlroy’s style is more beneficial for young golfers to learn from, given his successful and consistent performance on the course.

Woods has been actively involved in his son’s golfing journey, even caddying for him during competitions. When asked about this experience, Charlie said: “It’s great. We focus on each shot, and he keeps me grounded. When I want to move on, he reminds me to stay present and focus on what’s next.”

Rory McIlroy at the Open Championship

Charlie will have another opportunity to observe McIlroy’s technique at the upcoming Open Championship, held in Northern Ireland for the first time since 2019. McIlroy aims to improve upon his previous performance, where he missed the cut.

Reflecting on his past experience, McIlroy shared: “In 2019, I tried to isolate myself, but now I embrace the tournament, accepting the attention and energy around me. It’s better for everyone when I embrace it, and I think this mindset will lead to a more positive experience on the course.”
