Smokey Robinson: A Life Behind the Music

While celebrated for his soulful voice and timeless hits, Smokey Robinson’s life has been a complex journey marked by personal struggles. From a humble childhood in Detroit amid a household of 11, he found refuge in music, writing over 100 songs by age 17, eventually forming The Miracles—pioneers of the Motown sound.

His career skyrocketed after discovering fame with hits like “Shop Around,” making him a symbol of hope for many young Black Americans. However, behind the glamour, Smokey faced significant challenges. His marriage to Claudette Rogers, his bandmate, endured strain amid infidelity, as he maintained a secret affair with Diana Ross, which contributed to their 1986 divorce.

The emotional toll of his personal life led Smokey into a dark period, battling addiction and a severe decline in health. Weighing only 120 pounds at one point, he was warned by a church minister about the dangers of continued drug use. That visit became a turning point—he entered treatment and quietly began rebuilding his life.

Years later, a legal dispute over songwriting rights with Claudette brought further complexities to his legacy. Although he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 1987, critics argued that The Miracles deserved equal recognition, highlighting his foundational role in Motown’s success. The Hall of Fame finally acknowledged The Miracles in 2012, but by then, many of Smokey’s close friends from the era had passed away, including Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke.

Other personal setbacks, such as the tragic loss of Marvin Gaye in 1984, deeply affected him. As he entered his 80s, Smokey faced COVID-19, being hospitalized but ultimately recovering, reaffirming his resilience.

Despite his battles, Smokey has continued to create and perform, channeling his life experiences into his music. Today, he remains a symbol of perseverance and human vulnerability—proof that even legends confront real struggles behind the scenes.
