AOC Ripped Over NYC District Overrun by ‘Market of Sweethearts’
Community Criticizes Lack of Leadership in Roosevelt Avenue Cleanup
Residents, business owners, and local leaders in Queens are voicing frustration over the absence of action from Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez regarding ongoing issues along Roosevelt Avenue, particularly in the area known as the “Market of Sweethearts.” The neighborhood has been plagued by rampant prostitution, illegal street vendors, and gang influence, which have worsened amid the region’s migrant crisis.
Local voices feel neglected by AOC. Rosa Sanchez, president of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, stated she hasn’t seen the congresswoman within the community since her election, only during a parade. Residents report witnessing persistent illegal vending—often involving stolen goods—and increased sex trafficking, with young women trapped in forced sex work without sufficient political intervention.
Despite law enforcement efforts like “Operation Restore Roosevelt,” which aimed to curb illegal activity for 90 days, vendors and crimes have resurged once police presence diminished. Nearby businesses, including a supermarket manager, noted ongoing thefts of goods like meat and detergent, underscoring the area’s persistent lawlessness.
Community leader Mauricio Zamora criticized AOC for inaction on major safety concerns, despite discussions with local officials. Unlike Bronx Rep. Ritchie Torres, who publicly called on city officials to address open-air drug markets, AOC has largely distanced herself from the neighborhood’s issues, residents say.
Lawmakers have also appealed to federal authorities, urging the FBI and Homeland Security to intervene against gang violence and migrant-related lawlessness, which further exacerbates community suffering. On the ground, residents like Jenny Leo mention never seeing AOC, while local law enforcement continues to struggle with escalating illegal activity.
Former Councilman Hiram Monserrate emphasized the need for a stronger police presence, noting that recent police operations temporarily reduced crime, but more sustained efforts are necessary. The community hopes AOC will leverage her platform to secure increased law enforcement and truly address their concerns.
