Staten Island Summer Theater Promises a Stunning Return Post-COVID

Return of Summer Theater Brings Community Together in Staten Island

The summer theater season has resumed in Staten Island for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, with a heartfelt production of Fiddler on the Roof. The cast features ten families and numerous friends, emphasizing the close bonds that bring the cast to life on stage at the CUNY College of Staten Island.

The rehearsals have been intensive, with rehearsals five days a week leading up to the premiere scheduled for July 31 in CSI’s Williamson Theatre. Despite the demanding schedule, cast members describe the experience as a joyful reunion and a chance to cherish their connections. Many share a history of community theater involvement, sitting in audiences while their families performed in shows.

Retired NYPD officer BJ High, 46, takes pride in portraying Tevye, the lead role, with his wife and son participating alongside him. He recounts how they practice lines everywhere—from home kitchens to trips in the car—creating memorable moments as a family. High met his wife Christie on stage in 1998, and their family bond deepens through this shared passion.

The play’s message resonates strongly with the cast, celebrating family, tradition, and unity amid societal upheaval. Costume designer Peter Ascolese, 41, highlights the show’s themes of generations coming together, emphasizing its relevance to the cast’s own familiar ties. The production was notably competitive, with over 90 auditioning for 46 spots and a 10-musician orchestra supporting the cast.

This year’s show honors the memory of Jennifer Straniere, a longtime performing arts director at CSI, who cherished Fiddler on the Roof as her favorite. Her legacy is carried on by her family, including her father, daughter, and granddaughter, all participating in this summer’s performance.

Among the cast is Katie Micha, 30, who plays Chava, joining her aunt and cousins in what they call a “family affair.” Micha describes the musical as a personal favorite and expresses enthusiasm about sharing the stage with loved ones and the local theater community, emphasizing the importance of community and tradition.
