Long Island Now Hosts One of the Fastest US Mail Systems
New High-Tech Postal Facility Boosts Mail Efficiency in Long Island
A state-of-the-art U.S. Postal Service sorting and delivery center has recently opened in Huntington Station, Suffolk County, significantly enhancing mail processing speed and reliability in the region. This facility is part of a nationwide $40 billion modernization effort aimed at modernizing aging infrastructure across the country.
The Huntington Center, along with Nassau County’s recent hub upgrade in Hicksville, now makes Long Island one of the few regions with fully modernized postal operations. USPS spokeswoman Amy Gibbs explained that these advancements position Long Island’s mail system among the most efficient nationwide.
Improved Operations and Faster Delivery
Inside the new facility, advanced machines are capable of sorting 6,000 packages in under two hours— a task that previously took five hours. Delivery routes are now optimized, allowing carriers to make up to 500 stops daily using new electric delivery trucks, reducing environmental impact & enhancing efficiency.
The electric delivery trucks are designed for longer operation without frequent charges and feature improved visibility and ergonomics to enhance speed and safety. Currently, 16 EV trucks serve Suffolk, with plans to replace the entire fleet of 1,400 vehicles over time.
Benefits for Employees and Customers
With the upgraded facility, employees begin their shifts 30 minutes earlier, enabling faster mail processing and earlier deliveries. Previously, sorting was done by six carriers over a full day; now, two or three carriers accomplish the same in about 90 minutes.
Postmaster General Doug Tulino emphasized that these investments are making USPS more capable and competitive for the future, while also improving working conditions with better space, lighting, and workflow efficiencies.
As part of broad efforts nationwide, these upgrades aim to restore consistent next-day service, reflecting USPS’s commitment to reliable, modern mail delivery.
