Sailboat with 10 on board sinks after crash into New Jersey jetty in rough seas

Rescue of 10 After Sailboat Collides with Rocks in Avalon, New Jersey

Ten individuals were saved after their sailboat struck a rocky jetty in Avalon on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when a distress call was issued, prompting rescue teams to respond.

Video footage shows the yellow sailboat navigating the rough waters before it was tossed into the rocks by powerful waves. The boat had tried to exit the inlet but was hindered by the turbulent sea conditions. Winds from the northeast pushed it against the rocks, causing it to become lodged and begin sinking.

Avalon Beach Patrol, along with emergency medical services and water rescue personnel, were dispatched to assist those onboard. Due to the dangerous water conditions, rescue swimmers couldn’t go directly into the water; instead, rescue operators used a jet ski to reach the passengers, all of whom wore lifejackets, and bring them to safety.

More footage shows rescue team members on jet skis approaching the boat, which was pinned against the rocks and sinking. The passengers, visibly distressed, floated in the water awaiting rescue in the rough surf.

A Avalon Rescue Chief described the scene as highly perilous, noting that the boat was “pinned against the rocks” while sinking. The rescued individuals appeared very upset, having reportedly been swimming for their lives. Fortunately, everyone made it to shore unharmed, and no injuries were reported.

“It was a really dangerous situation,” said the rescue coordinator, emphasizing the risks involved in the rescue operation.
