Mass Stabbing at Traverse City Walmart
Multiple People Stabbed in Michigan Walmart Attack
At least 11 individuals were injured in a mass stabbing inside a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, causing chaos as shoppers and staff scrambled to escape. An armed bystander managed to detain the suspect, ending the violent episode.
The incident began around 5 p.m., when a 42-year-old man randomly attacked shoppers with a folding knife throughout the store. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff described the assaults as “random acts,” noting such violence is highly unusual for the area.
Several victims sustained critical injuries, and five others were seriously hurt. All were hospitalized at Munson Medical Center, the region’s largest hospital. Officials indicated that six victims are in critical condition, with the rest in serious condition.
Witnesses reported the attack started near the checkout area, prompting screams and a frantic evacuation. An employee, Tasha Nash, recounted seeing the attacker stabbing multiple people, including one in the eye. The chaos was further amplified as two brave shoppers, one armed, subdued the attacker before police arrived.
Video footage captured the suspect being surrounded by bystanders and the armed shopper, with law enforcement quickly responding to secure the scene. Emergency services arrived in force, with numerous police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, and rescue vehicles. Customers and employees waited outside, watching as investigators examined the store.
The suspected attacker was taken into custody and transported in a sheriff’s vehicle. Authorities have not released his name or confirmed a motive, but believe he is a Michigan resident. Walmart representatives stated they are cooperating with law enforcement.
The community’s thoughts are with the victims and their families, and officials expressed gratitude to first responders for their rapid action. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the FBI have acknowledged the incident, with the FBI providing additional support as investigations continue. The area remains cordoned off as officials conduct the ongoing inquiry.
