Oklahoma Pediatrician Neha Gupta Faces Drowning Charge in Florida Child Case
The Oklahoma pediatrician suspected of drowning her 4-year-old daughter in Florida was found hiding in a laundry room during a police raid earlier this month. Body camera footage shows law enforcement officers and US Marshals outside her home demanding she surrender. When she refused to open the door, authorities forcibly entered, with officers passing a child’s toy set as they searched for her.
Gupta was discovered in a dark corner of the laundry room and was promptly detained. She was then taken out of her house through the garage. Photos from the scene show her tucked away in the laundry area during the raid.
The arrest was made a few days after Gupta allegedly caused her daughter’s death while on vacation in Miami. On June 27, Gupta called 911 early in the morning to report an accidental drowning at a short-term rental. When rescuers arrived, they found the girl in the pool unresponsive and transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead within an hour.
Autopsy results revealed no water in her lungs or stomach, indicating drowning was unlikely. Instead, injuries consistent with suffocation suggested she died from asphyxiation before being placed in the pool. Investigators noted her stomach was empty, contradicting Gupta’s account that she and her daughter had dinner at 9 p.m. that night. This discrepancy led to a warrant for her arrest.
Gupta, who had already returned to Oklahoma, was located by authorities with assistance from the state police and federal marshals. She was extradited to Miami, where she faces a first-degree murder charge and is being held without bail. Her upcoming court appearance in Florida is scheduled for August 7.
Prior to the incident, Gupta had been dismissed from her position at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital and was involved in a contentious custody dispute with her ex-husband. The couple’s divorce was finalized in 2024, but she was denied sole custody of their child.
