Florida Man Busted Drinking and Mowing on Highway
Man Arrested for DUI While Driving Lawn Mower on Florida Highway
Traffic in Florida was disrupted when authorities halted a man driving an unconventional vehicle — a lawn mower — on Suncoast Parkway. Witnesses reported erratic behavior around 8:30 a.m., prompting a patrol officer to respond.
The officer arrived to find 38-year-old Christopher Spain seated on the mower alongside the highway shoulder. During the interaction, the officer noticed signs of intoxication, including pinpoint pupils, flushed skin, dry mouth, nasal irritation, sniffling, and throat clearing.
Attempts to administer a field sobriety test were unsuccessful, as Spain became uncooperative after multiple tries. He was promptly placed under arrest and charged with driving under the influence. Spain was booked into Hernando County Jail and later released on a $500 bond.
Images capture the moment of his apprehension, with law enforcement noting his impaired state upon inspection.
This isn’t the first DUI involving a lawn mower in the state. In 2020, Paul Burke was apprehended while driving a riding mower in the middle of a highway. Authorities reported he had three prior DUI convictions and admitted to having no driver’s license, indicating he had been drinking beforehand.
Similarly, in 2017, Kenneth Burton Alleshouse was arrested after police detected alcohol fumes while he was riding his lawn mower on US Highway 1, carrying beer. Blood tests revealed his blood alcohol level was over three times the legal limit, according to reports.
Florida law defines any device used for transportation on the highway, including lawn mowers, as a vehicle. The legal blood alcohol limit for operating such vehicles is 0.08%, making operating a lawn mower under the influence a prosecutable offense.
