Trump to Exit UNESCO Over DEI and Pro-Palestinian/China Policies

President Trump Announces US Withdrawal from UNESCO

The United States is set to leave the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), citing concerns over its anti-American and anti-Israel biases, as well as its promotion of progressive social causes.

Earlier this year, President Trump ordered a 90-day review of America’s involvement with UNESCO. The review highlighted issues such as the organization’s diversity policies, its pro-Palestinian stance, and its alignment with China’s interests. Officials expressed dissatisfaction with UNESCO’s focus on social justice initiatives and its language regarding Israel and Palestine.

Among contentious actions was UNESCO’s designation of certain Jewish holy sites as “Palestinian World Heritage” locations, sparking criticism from the administration. The organization often refers to Israel’s presence in occupied territories and criticisms of Israel’s military actions while failing to condemn Hamas’s violence in Gaza.

Additionally, China plays a significant role as the second-largest contributor to UNESCO, with some Chinese officials influencing policies that downplay minority issues, such as the Uyghurs. The White House argues that Beijing uses its financial influence within UNESCO to shape outcomes favorable to its interests.

Critics also point to UNESCO’s 2023 publication of an “anti-racism toolkit” and the 2024 “Transforming MEN’talities” initiative, which promotes gender norm reforms and social justice policies that the US finds misaligned with its values.

President Trump previously withdrew the US from UNESCO in 2017, citing anti-Israel bias, and had rejoined under President Biden in 2023 after promising to settle overdue dues exceeding $600 million. The Biden administration aimed to counter Chinese influence and ensure American influence in international organizations.

Historically, the US withdrew from UNESCO in 1983 under President Reagan, criticizing the organization for politicization and endorsing excessive expansion. The current decision reflects ongoing concerns about UNESCO’s policies and its alignment with broader geopolitical interests.
