NYC Mayor Adams Says He Hasn’t Asked Trump for Re-Election Help
NYC Mayor Adams: No Support From Trump, but Confident in Re-election
While President Trump has publicly praised Mayor Eric Adams’ re-election campaign, there’s been no indication of Trump offering direct assistance. Adams stated, “I haven’t asked for his endorsement or help, and he hasn’t interfered with the race.”
Despite Adams’s optimistic outlook, recent polls show him trailing significantly behind front-runner Zohran Mamdani by more than 20 points. Nonetheless, Adams remains confident he can secure a victory in November, even with rivals like Curtis Sliwa and former Governor Andrew Cuomo also running.
“I need to win based on my campaign and what I do best,” Adams said. The race mainly involves moderate Democrats, Republicans, and independents, with Cuomo and Adams urging each other to exit, believing only they can prevent Mamdani from winning, who is viewed as a far-left socialist.
Adams has been cautious about Trump’s potential endorsement, especially given the city’s Democratic dominance where only a small percentage supported Trump last year. He declined to comment on whether he’d accept a Republican line if Sliwa were to step down, noting legal hurdles. Sliwa, however, insists he remains committed to his mayoral bid despite past disagreements with Trump and the likelihood that he would need a federal appointment or other circumstances to leave the ballot.

Though Trump has not reached out to Adams, he has criticized Mamdani, calling the socialist a “100% Communist Lunatic” after Mamdani’s upset victory in the Democratic primary. Trump’s remarks on social media have kept him at odds with the far-left faction within New York’s political landscape.
Ex-Mayor Bill de Blasio warned that an endorsement from Trump might harm Adams’s chances, citing that only 30% of NYC voters supported Trump last election. “It’s bad math,” de Blasio explained, emphasizing that most New Yorkers would disapprove of a Trump-affiliated candidate, especially in the current polarized climate.
