Republicans criticize Zohran Mamdani’s Property Abolition Support
NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Faces Backlash Over Radical Housing Remarks
Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, has come under fire after a video surfaced showing him supporting the idea of “abolishing private property” to ensure housing for all. In the clip, Mamdani states that a system guaranteeing housing—whether termed as abolition of private property or a statewide housing guarantee—is preferable to current conditions.
“If any system can guarantee housing for everyone, I prefer it,” Mamdani said. “People often try to smear these ideas, but I care more about whether individuals have a place to live.”
The resurfaced clip, which was circulated by a conservative outlet, signals potential attacks from GOP officials linking Mamdani to Marxist ideas, especially if he wins the race. The clip also includes Mamdani discussing “seizing the means of production,” a concept rooted in Marxist theory.
President Trump labeled Mamdani a “communist,” while Mamdani identifies as a Democratic socialist. Critics on the right, including GOP leaders, argue that Mamdani’s plans—such as proposing 200,000 affordable units over ten years funded by increased taxes—are dangerous for New York’s future.
“Seize the means of production & the abolishment of private property” are ideas shared by Karl Marx and Mamdani.
— Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R), whose mother fled communist Cuba, commented on Mamdani’s statements.
Other Republicans, like Rep. Mike Lawler, described Mamdani’s views as “bat shit insane” and vowed to oppose him at the ballot box. Mamdani has dismissed some of the backlash, downplaying his Marxist rhetoric.
Despite the controversy, Mamdani recently defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary and is favored to win the general election against incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa. He has sought to reassure city business leaders that his proposed tax increases to fund affordable housing and social programs are manageable.
Major Democratic figures, including Governor Kathy Hochul and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have yet to endorse Mamdani. He is scheduled to meet with Hakeem Jeffries to discuss his platform further.
