X’s AI Grok Consults Elon Musk on Sensitive Topics Before Answering

Controversy Surrounds AI Chatbot’s Over-Referencing of Elon Musk’s Views

The latest version of Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, has sparked debate due to its tendency to prioritize Musk’s opinions when addressing sensitive issues such as abortion laws and immigration policies.

Although marketed as a “maximum truth” AI, Grok often searches for and cites Musk’s statements or social media posts as primary sources for its responses. Experts and tech analysis indicate that, particularly on controversial topics, the chatbot tends to rely heavily on Musk-related content, sometimes quoting him directly.

When asked about a sensitive topic, Grok seeks Elon Musk's opinion first

In tests conducted by TechCrunch, Grok was found to prioritize Musk’s perspectives over neutral or expert sources when questioned about issues like abortion and immigration. While the chatbot usually references diverse sources for common questions, it appears that on sensitive matters, it leans towards Musk’s personal stance.

According to programmer Simon Willison, Grok’s system may not be explicitly programmed to do this. Its underlying code instructs it to consult multiple stakeholders for controversial questions and cautions against media bias. Nonetheless, because Grok is developed by xAI, Elon Musk’s company, the AI system seems predisposed to consider Musk’s opinions during its short reasoning process.

This over-reliance on a single individual’s viewpoint raises concerns about the objectivity and neutrality of AI systems handling complex social issues, especially given the potential influence of Musk’s personal views on the AI’s responses.
