A Washington state deputy demonstrated impressive cowboy skills by lassoing a chainsaw-wielding man during a police intervention. The incident was captured on police body camera footage, showing the deputy expertly throwing a lasso around the suspect.

According to Deputy Carly Cappetto of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, “A lasso is definitely something you don’t normally see on a regular basis.”

The officers responded to a domestic dispute involving a man chasing his father with a chainsaw. When they arrived, they found a 32-year-old in the midst of a mental health crisis, still armed with the chainsaw, and refused to surrender.

After nearly an hour of negotiation, one officer from the mountain detachment team—experienced with handling large animals—grabbed his lasso from his vehicle. When the suspect continued to resist, the deputy cast the lasso around him with precision.

The suspect was dragged onto land, screaming, as officers shouted commands. Nobody was hurt during the incident, and he was taken to a hospital for mental health treatment.

Deputy Cappetto praised the deputies, saying, “Great job to these deputies who thought outside the box — using a method that caused no harm. The suspect received appropriate care afterward.”

According to the sheriff’s office, this was the first documented case of a police officer using a lasso to apprehend a suspect.

“The suspect was suffering a crisis with a deadly weapon, making threats and refusing help. How do you safely take someone into custody in such a situation? In this case, a lasso did the trick,” Cappetto added.
