NYC Pups Battle in Look-Alike Contest for Krypto from Superman
Dog Costume Contest Celebrates Superhero Spirit
Dozens of dogs gathered at Hudson Yards to compete in a fun-themed event inspired by superhero loyal sidekicks. The highlight was a competition for the best Krypto the Superdog look-alike, where one adorable pup ultimately stole the show.
Sofia, a 7-year-old Brooklyn-based dog, was awarded the top prize along with a $1,000 reward. Her owner explained that her victory wasn’t solely based on appearance — Sofia also embodies her superhero’s caring and protective nature.
She was dressed in a costume, cap flapping in the wind, and charmed judges by lifting her ears and tilting her head, endearing herself to the crowd. Her owner, Meredith Amspoker, praised Sofia’s personality, describing her as a dog who looks out for others and remains friendly and inclusive.
Since the movie featuring Superman’s loyal companion, the demand for adopting similar dogs has surged. Owners and spectators alike are captivated by the playful and heroic qualities of these pups, with some even receiving awards for their creative costumes and resemblance — including Jeffrey, a small dog who was a runner-up for the least Krypto-like appearance.
Jeffrey’s owner, Ed Medina, 72, shared that his dog remains a hero in his eyes because Jeffrey keeps him happy. Dressed in a jersey with Jeffrey’s face, Medina proudly exclaimed that his pup’s personality makes him a superdog.
Event attendee Mallorie Sievert, a 23-year-old actress, brought friends from Manhattan to witness this celebration of canine creativity. She enjoys the unlikely event where dozens of dogs don costumes and capes, emphasizing the city’s unique charm.
“I love New York City because where else would you see 50 dogs in capes showing off their superpowers?” she said with a smile.
