Trump Cuts Federal Funds for California’s $135B High-Speed Rail

Federal Funds Terminated for California High-Speed Rail Project

The federal government has officially cut approximately $4 billion in unspent funds allocated to California’s long-delayed high-speed rail initiative. President Trump announced the decision, criticizing the project’s management and its escalating costs.

Trump described the rail project as a “boondoggle” led by California Governor Gavin Newsom, criticizing it for costing taxpayers hundreds of billions without delivering any tangible results, including the promised train line. The project, initially a voter-approved initiative in 2008, aimed to develop an 800-mile rail network connecting major cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, with extensions to Sacramento and San Diego. It was initially supposed to be completed by 2020 within a $33 billion budget.

However, by 2019, the project’s scope was drastically scaled back due to budget overruns, with costs rising to around $77.3 billion. The line was reduced to a 171-mile segment, and efforts to secure additional federal funding, including an $8 billion grant in 2021, have since been further curtailed, with the current plan covering just 119 miles.

The Department of Transportation cited mismanagement and failure to meet deadlines as reasons for withdrawing federal support. Acting FRA administrator Drew Feeley stated that the project breach of commitments and inability to complete it by December 31, 2033, rendered it incompatible with federal funding requirements.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy further emphasized that California’s leadership bears responsibility, criticizing long-standing inefficiencies and lack of results. Duffy indicated that the agency might pursue legal action to recover federal funds.

California Governor Gavin Newsom responded by suggesting the state might sue to retain the funds, asserting that construction is already underway on parts of the project and promising to explore options for contesting the federal decision.

President Trump called the project “ill-conceived” and a “total waste of taxpayer money,” vowing that no federal funds would support the California high-speed rail again. The dispute highlights ongoing tensions over large infrastructure projects and federal oversight.
