Zohran Mamdani Confronts Key Dems at DC Breakfast Hosted by AOC After Political Shakeup

Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Gains Support in Washington, D.C.

New York City’s progressive frontrunner Zohran Mamdani was warmly received by prominent Democratic figures in Congress during a visit to Washington, D.C. Among those greeting him were Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, who expressed strong support for his campaign.

At a breakfast gathering hosted by Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani engaged with several House Democrats, including Rep. Jerry Nadler, who endorsed him following his surprising primary victory over Andrew Cuomo. Attendees included prominent liberals eager to meet the socialist candidate face-to-face, capturing photos and sharing enthusiasm for his grassroots movement.

Sanders commended Mamdani on his campaign, noting, “Had a great meeting today. The grassroots effort he’s leading is truly impressive.” Mamdani responded by saying he was honored to meet one of his political heroes. Other meetings included photos with Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, and Rep. Melanie Stansbury, who all praised his potential as NYC’s mayor.

Despite the warm reception, some key Democratic leaders such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer did not endorse Mamdani publicly. Instead, they indicated plans to meet him back in New York. Nevertheless, other congressmembers like Rep. Nydia Velázquez, Rep. Mark Takano, and Reps. Debbie Dingell and Ro Khanna expressed strong support during the event.

Mamdani’s visit also coincided with efforts to win favor from New York City’s business community, especially as he prepared for the November election against Mayor Eric Adams. During a high-profile meeting with around 100 CEOs, he reaffirmed his commitment to increased taxes on the wealthy and large corporations, signaling a broadening outreach strategy as he gears up to challenge his political rivals, including Cuomo and incumbent Adams.

Supporters view Mamdani’s campaign as a transformative force within the Democratic Party, emphasizing his grassroots appeal and bold policy proposals.
