How Trump Can Shape the Mideast Through His Deal-Making

Regional Changes and Strategies Against Iran

Following recent successes in halting Iran’s nuclear ambitions, leaders are aiming not just to contain the threat but to reshape the Middle East for improved stability and peace.

During my tenure as Secretary of State, I understood that transforming the region required demonstrating that shared interests can outweigh historical conflicts and diminish malicious actors. Iran has long been a source of unrest since the 1979 revolution.

The recent weakening of Iran’s regional influence offers a rare chance to secure a peaceful future. Currently, Iran’s regime is fragile, but it will likely attempt to recover. We must sustain pressure to prevent Iran from regaining power or threatening Americans and allies.

Successive efforts should include intensifying the “maximum pressure” campaign—restoring sanctions and isolating Iran diplomatically—while maintaining readiness to use force if necessary. The first wave of pressure greatly cut Iran’s revenue, impeding their nuclear and terrorist activities.

Simultaneously, we should encourage the Iranian people’s desire for freedom. Iran’s government survives through repression, despite widespread unpopularity. Its grip is sustained by economic hardship and social unrest, with brutal suppression of protests in 2022 illustrating the regime’s vulnerability.

Advocating for a peaceful transition is crucial. Supporting the Iranian opposition’s democratic aspirations, not regime change, can leverage internal dissent and prepare for potential regime collapse. Once the regime weakens further, pro-democracy forces must ensure stability and prevent chaos.

Enhanced coordination with Iranian opposition groups and international efforts to highlight abuses can amplify this strategic approach. The collective efforts of leaders can usher in a new era, where sustained pressure and support for the Iranian people’s hopes could finally bring regional peace.

With persistent commitment, the goal of lasting peace and economic prosperity in the Middle East may become a reality, turning once-impossible ambitions into reality.
