Phil Mickelson has shared how he named his putter the ‘Tiger Slayer’, reflecting his confidence in outperforming Tiger Woods during the latter stages of their careers. Speaking on his latest YouTube video with Grant Horvat, Mickelson expressed high regard for Woods, calling him “the greatest of all time,” but emphasized that he managed to hold his own against him.

Mickelson recounted a pivotal moment at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where a hot streak with his putter helped him outplay Woods in the final round, shooting 64 compared to Woods’ 75. This victory marked a turning point, as Mickelson noted that he eventually evened the head-to-head record after years of being dominated by Woods early in his career.

When asked about the origin of the putter’s name, Mickelson explained, “2012 AT&T I used that putter and I made everything and shot 64 and he shot 75. And that’s where it initially slayed the Tiger… and after that it kept doing it.”

He acknowledged Woods’ exceptional talent, especially during his legendary Tiger Slam, but shared pride in his own improvements after partnering with coach Butch Harmon. “His record is his record, he’s the greatest of all time,” Mickelson said, “but I started working with Butch after 2007, and my head-to-head results improved significantly. Now, when we are paired together, I believe the record is dead even.”

Mickelson expressed admiration for Woods’ extraordinary skills, noting how he’s witnessed moments on the course that few others could match, highlighting Woods’ 2000 season as particularly remarkable.
