Heavy Rain Causes Severe Flash Flooding in Ruidoso, New Mexico

A sudden and intense thunderstorm recently struck the Ruidoso area, unleashing over 3 inches of water onto fragile, fire-affected terrain. The burned soil, now hydrophobic, couldn’t absorb the rainfall, which led to rapid runoff down the slopes of South Fork and Blowburn, transforming hillside areas into raging torrents.

The floodwaters carried heavy debris, mud, and large logs, drastically changing small creeks into dangerous, destructive channels. The Rio Ruidoso surged beyond 20 feet—far above its normal flood stage—resulting in widespread destruction. Entire homes, trailers, and parts of roads were swept away or severely damaged as the river’s rising waters rushed downstream, filling streets with mud and debris.

Several streets, including White Mountain Road, Paradise Canyon, and Cedar Creek, were shut down due to flooding. Emergency shelters opened quickly at local centers like the Ruidoso Community Center and Eastern New Mexico University to assist displaced residents. Nearby communities, such as Ruidoso Downs and Gleno, also experienced overflowing creeks, submerging homes and trapping vehicles in muddy waters.

Rescue operations involved multiple agencies, including helicopter evacuations, as crews worked diligently to reach stranded individuals. Reports from Hollywood indicated a family of three was carried away by rising waters. The rapid rise of the river, from just over one foot to more than 20 in less than an hour, was confirmed as a potential record level for the Rio Ruidoso.

Authorities issued urgent warnings to avoid flooded areas and refrain from crossing moving streams, emphasizing the life-threatening danger of the floodwaters. Damage assessments continue, but at least several injuries have been reported, and the full extent of destruction remains uncertain.

The area’s vulnerability is heightened due to previous wildfires, which created burn scars that hindered water absorption and contributed to clogging waterways with sediment. Despite ongoing efforts, many flood prevention projects remain unfunded or incomplete, raising concerns about further storms during the ongoing monsoon season.

Local officials and political leaders urged residents to stay prepared, follow evacuation protocols, and heed warnings to prevent future tragedies amid these hazardous conditions.
