Peter Thiel: Elon Musk Has Abandoned Mars Colonization Ambitions

Elon Musk Abandons Mars Dreams, According to Peter Thiel

Elon Musk has reportedly abandoned his vision of establishing a human colony on Mars, according to venture capitalist Peter Thiel. In an interview, Thiel stated that Musk no longer believes that colonization of the Red Planet is a feasible goal for humanity, with 2024 marking the decisive shift in perspective.

Musk, known for his ambitious interplanetary ambitions, previously claimed that humans could reach Mars by 2028 and emphasized the importance of establishing a civilization there as a safeguard against potential Earth-bound catastrophes. Recently, however, focus has shifted towards SpaceX projects at the expense of interplanetary colonization plans. Notably, a recent test flight of Musk’s Starship ended in a catastrophic failure when the vehicle exploded.

Thiel suggests that the change in attitude toward Mars was politically motivated, implying that Musk saw the project as a way to counteract socialism and “woke” AI developments in the United States. Thiel mentioned a conversation between Musk and Demis Hassabis, head of Google DeepMind, which reportedly influenced Musk’s reassessment. During their discussion, Hassabis remarked that AI systems could follow humans to Mars, causing Musk to fall silent, according to Thiel.

The shift in Musk’s outlook reflects a broader change from viewing Mars colonization as an ideological pursuit to recognizing the significant technological and political challenges involved.
