Lightning Strike at NJ Archery Range Kills Instructor and Injures 14
An outdoor archery event in New Jersey turned tragic when a lightning bolt struck the Black Knight Bowbenders Archery Club in Jackson Township, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. during a scout troop lesson, where volunteer instructor Robert Montgomery, 61, was teaching young participants how to shoot arrows.
The lightning struck a tree near the group, unleashing a fiery surge that caused injuries to as many as four children and one adult. Emergency responders transported 14 injured individuals — some suffering severe burns — to nearby hospitals. One person temporarily lost consciousness but was later stabilized.
The victim who lost their life was dedicated to teaching at the nonprofit archery range. The club confirmed that Montgomery was instructing the scouts when the lightning struck. As a result, the group was shocked by the sudden, deadly jolt from the storm.
Authorities reported that the lightning hit a tree close to where the children and volunteers were gathered. The state’s governor, Phil Murphy, acknowledged the rarity and tragedy of the event, urging residents to stay safe during severe weather conditions.
Earlier that evening, New Jersey had issued flash flood and thunderstorm warnings. The governor warned residents to “stay inside and exercise caution” amidst dangerous weather.
This incident marks the second lightning-related death in the state within the week. Earlier, a golfer was struck and killed during a storm at Ballyowen Golf Course. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the lightning strike at the archery event.
