Golfer Dies After Lightning Strike at New Jersey Course

Tragic Death of Golfer Struck by Lightning During Tournament

A professional golfer has died after being hit by lightning during a tournament at a golf course in New Jersey. The incident occurred at Ballyowen Golf Course in Hardyston on July 8, as severe thunderstorms swept through the area.

Simon John Mariani, 28, was struck on the 15th hole, about 300 yards from guide observers who reported witnessing the storm’s darkening skies moments before the strike. Despite immediate efforts by fellow players and off-duty emergency personnel, Mariani succumbed to his injuries days later.

According to witnesses, the golf course staff did not issue any lightning warning prior to the incident; the warning horns sounded only after the storm had passed and players had returned to the clubhouse. One golfer, Brian Delia, who filmed the gathering ominous clouds before the strike, said he didn’t hear any alarms calling players off the course.

Mariani was known for his academic achievements, having graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in economics and later earning a master’s in finance in 2024. He worked recently as an associate at a health investment firm in New York City. He enjoyed painting, baking, photography, and was fond of Taylor Swift and Jimmy Buffett, along with his favorite treats and bagels.

A funeral mass for Mariani is planned for Friday at the Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Franklin Lakes. He is survived by his parents and two sisters.
