House Speaker Mike Johnson: ‘Happy Warrior’ Shares Friendly Moments with Nancy Pelosi
House Speaker Mike Johnson Shares Behind-the-Scenes Tales and Leadership Insights
During a recent episode of “Pod Force One,” House Speaker Mike Johnson recounted a humorous moment involving President Trump. Johnson mimicked Trump’s Queens-style accent while describing how the president chose the name for the legislative bill, calling it the “One Big Beautiful Bill”.
Johnson explained that John Smith, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, had proposed a few acronyms for the bill. However, Trump was fixated on his chosen name, saying, “No, I think we should just call it the One Big Beautiful Bill. Isn’t that great?” Johnson mimicked Trump’s brassy tone, adding that the president even asked if an exclamation point could be added, which prompted Johnson to clarify that legislative documents don’t typically use exclamation points.
Beyond the humorous anecdotes, Johnson revealed a cordial relationship with Nancy Pelosi, noting, “She’s very kind. I try not to make enemies, and while we have policy disagreements, it’s not personal,” reflecting an ethos reminiscent of Ronald Reagan’s principle of civility even among rivals.
He praised Trump as being “more dialed in than any recent Commander in Chief.” When asked about possibly running for president, Johnson dismissed the idea, stating, “I never aspired to this job, and I don’t think about that now. I’ll serve where I am needed.”
Johnson also shared insights into his leadership approach within a challenging House caucus characterized by a slim majority and frequent disruptions. He describes himself as “a mental health counselor as much as a legislator,” emphasizing the importance of understanding individual members’ motivations and maintaining unity despite internal conflicts.
Having unexpectedly become speaker in late 2023 after the House Republican revolt against Kevin McCarthy, Johnson emphasized his genuine affection for colleagues and his ability to navigate the complexities of congressional leadership.
