WhatsApp Clique Secret Behind Lionesses’ New Celebration at Euros

England Players Develop Special Celebration as Team Spirit Boosts Performance

During a recent match against Wales, players Aggie Beever-Jones and Beth Mead scored and celebrated with a unique gesture: they sprinted to the bench, raised their hands, and clicked their fingers. This ‘clicking’ celebration was quickly echoed by the substitutes on the sidelines, marking the birth of a team tradition known as “the clicking clique.”

Chloe Kelly, who has come off the bench in all three tournament games, shared that the celebration was designed for the team’s ‘finishers’—the substitutes prepared to make an impact later in the game. She explained, “We have a little group chat called ‘the finishers,’ and before matches, we do positive clicks on the bench, just supporting each other. If one of us scores, we celebrate with the finger click that we devised together.”

Ella Toone, who started against Wales, admitted she was initially unaware of the inside joke, and teammates Georgia Stanway and Keira Walsh also found the gesture initially confusing. Kelly added that the celebration is a sign of team camaraderie, emphasizing that it’s a positive, unifying tradition.

Kelly, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2022 final, stressed the importance of working hard and supporting one another both in training and on the pitch. She highlighted the collective effort and the strength of their team dynamic: “Our team is a great group of girls, and this celebration reflects our unity and positive mindset.”

Mead also reflected on the challenges faced by the bench players, mentioning that motivation and energy among teammates are vital, and sometimes overlooked. Despite the term “clique” often having negative connotations, Kelly insisted that their group fosters support and camaraderie rather than division.

Beyond the “finishers,” other team chats are active, including one led by Leah Williamson, involving players from the 2022 Euro-winning squad, along with former internationals like Jill Scott and Ellen White, sharing encouragement from afar.

Williamson noted that these ongoing group conversations reinforce team spirit and collective belief, which are crucial for success. She also jested about the team’s overall mood, humorously suggesting that they are so close, “we’re all ready to kill each other,” highlighting how tight-knit their camp truly is.
