Zohran Mamdani Promises to Tax the Rich in NYC Business Leaders Meeting

Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Reaffirms Tax Plan in Meeting with NYC Business Leaders

During a key discussion with around 100 prominent NYC CEOs, candidate Zohran Mamdani stood firm on his progressive policies, notably advocating for increased taxes on the wealthy and corporations if elected mayor.

Mamdani, known for his outspoken socialist stance—including his recent call for the abolition of billionaires—requested the meeting at the Partnership for New York City’s offices. Despite questions about his past comments on issues like Israel and his controversial phrase “seizing the means of production,” Mamdani maintained his position in a confident manner.

He emphasized that raising taxes on high earners had not driven elites out of New York before and expressed his intent to continue such policies. Business leaders noted Mamdani’s clear and organized communication style, with some observing that he appeared eager and prepared for the campaign months ahead of the November election.

Notably, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon declined to attend, citing a scheduling conflict, while other Wall Street executives sent representatives. Mamdani’s outreach efforts also included private meetings with key figures like Kathy Wylde, president of the Partnership for NYC, and a dozen executives from the Black Economic Alliance, aiming to build trust among business communities.

The candidate addressed sensitive topics, including the “globalize the intifada” rally and comments about Palestinians, which drew some criticism. Nonetheless, Mamdani’s approach focused on opening dialogue, with sources indicating he avoided political pitfalls during the discussions.

Many business leaders left the meeting contemplating whether Mamdani’s aggressive policy positions could be mitigated through cooperation. Some, like billionaire John Catsimatidis, have publicly threatened to close their businesses if Mamdani’s proposals—such as government-run grocery stores—are implemented.

As Mamdani continues to engage with NYC’s financial and business sectors, he emphasizes a collaborative approach, promising to work with a broad coalition of city stakeholders regardless of political differences, with his sights set on revitalizing New York city through new leadership and policies.
