Family Survives Explosion in NJ Home Fire During Storm
House Explosion in North Plainfield During Flooding Crisis
A residential fire and subsequent explosion occurred overnight in North Plainfield, New Jersey, leaving the house almost entirely destroyed. Remarkably, no injuries were reported since the family had evacuated earlier amid severe weather warnings.
Disturbing aerial photos reveal the home on Parkview Avenue reduced to debris after the explosion just before 11:25 p.m. on Monday, amid heavy rainfall and flooding across the region. Debris was scattered across neighboring yards and rooftops, with the house’s foundation visible beneath the rubble.
Fire crews arrived to find the residence engulfed in flames. Initially, the four residents were unaccounted for, but they soon explained that they had evacuated before the explosion, driven away by flood alerts issued for the neighborhood.
Remnants of the house could be seen strewn across the street as floodwaters still submerged much of the area. Nearby homes also appeared damaged, though the cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Suspected gas-related issues and neighborhood complaints about gas odors were reported around the time of the blast.
Governor Phil Murphy had previously declared a state of emergency due to the heavy rains and floods, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. In towns like Somerville and Plainsville, vehicles and emergency responders struggled against the rising waters, which overwhelmed some streets and overturned vehicles.
As the rain subsided in some areas, flood warnings expired, but persistent street flooding continued early Tuesday.
