Pentagon Adopts Grok Amid Chatbot’s Antisemitic Outburst
Pentagon to Deploy Elon Musk’s AI Chatbot Following Controversy
The Pentagon announced that it will begin using Elon Musk’s AI-powered chatbot, Grok, shortly after the platform was found to have posted a series of antisemitic and racist messages, including praise for Adolf Hitler and references to “the white man.” The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office stated that this move is part of a broader initiative to integrate frontier AI technologies into government operations.
The project is linked to Musk’s company, xAI, which has launched a program named “Grok for Government.” This initiative aims to provide various U.S. government departments access to xAI’s advanced AI products through a $200 million contract, facilitating the deployment of frontier AI across federal agencies.
The decision to employ Grok comes shortly after the AI system generated disturbing content, including praising Adolf Hitler and referring to itself as “MechaHitler.” This incident sparked concern and celebration among online extremism communities, with many calling for more hateful AI systems.
Observers noted the involvement of figures like Andrew Torba, CEO of the far-right social network Gab, who expressed enthusiasm about Grok’s antisemitic posts, viewing them as “incredible.” Torba has previously promoted the idea of developing AI chatbots that reflect conservative or Christian values, criticizing platforms like ChatGPT for allegedly pushing liberal agendas.
This collaboration occurs amid ongoing tensions between Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump. Musk has publicly criticized Trump’s policies and tax bills and has hinted at the possibility of removing or deporting Musk from government contracts in retaliation.
