Wrexham Star Rushed to Hospital in Sydney After Injury Amid Defeat

Wrexham Midfielder Hospitalized in Sydney After Injury During Pre-Season Match

The Wrexham football team faced a challenging moment during their pre-season tour in Australia when midfielder Ollie Rathbone was rushed to hospital after sustaining an injury in a recent friendly match.

The Welsh club, now competing in the Championship after earning promotion from League One last season, lost 2-1 to Sydney FC. Wrexham initially took the lead through an own goal by Corey Holman, but the hosts quickly responded with goals from Alexandar Popovic and James Lacey.

Adding to the team’s disappointment, Rathbone was injured just before halftime after landing awkwardly on his left ankle. He appeared to be in significant distress on the pitch before being helped off by medical staff.

Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, confirmed that Rathbone was taken to a local hospital for an X-ray to assess the injury’s severity. The 28-year-old, who played a key role in last season’s promotion campaign with 41 appearances, is known for his ability to disrupt play and contribute offensively, scoring eight goals and providing two assists in the previous season.

With just one match remaining on their Australian and New Zealand tour, Wrexham is hopeful Rathbone’s injury isn’t severe enough to threaten his participation in the upcoming league opener, which is scheduled away at Southampton in just over three weeks. The team will travel to New Zealand next to face Wellington Phoenix as their pre-season concludes.

Photos from the match show Rathbone landing on his ankle and the medical team attending to him on the field. The team’s management expressed concern about his condition, emphasizing hopes for a swift recovery.
